The “Knot In My Family” Game

Get into a big family circle and grab the hand of someone across from you. Then find someone else across from you and grab their hand too. This should form a big family KNOT. Your job is to untangle yourselves without breaking hands.

Then talk about how being a family means that sometimes knots are going to come up, but because you love each other, you will always find a way to work it out together.

The “Junk Rope” Exercise

Throughout the month, whenever “junk” (knots/conflict) comes up between two people, pull out the “junk rope”, tie a knot in the middle and hand an end to each person.

Have Person A and B walk away from each other till the rope is tight, then have them sit down. They must remain seated until both parties say, “I’m ready.” then walk them through these 4 easy steps:

1. Person A takes a step towards Person B and says, “You’re my (sister, brother, mom, etc.), then B takes a step towards A and says the same.
2. A takes a step towards B and says, “I was mad/hurt because (insert reason), then Person B takes a step and says their reason.
3. A takes a final step to the center and says, “I’m sorry” to B. And B takes a final step and says the same.
4. Then A and B work together to untie the knot between them and return it to the table.

(You can repeat this as often as necessary to bring peace home this month.)

Abraham had a chance to choose the best land. But in order to keep peace with his nephew Lot, he gave him first choice. Abraham didn’t want to fight with his family.

Life is going to have conflict. There is no avoiding it. We think it’s important that our kids learn how to “work it out” with their family and friends when there is a conflict. More importantly, God thinks it’s important! Three cheers for the peacemakers in your family!
